Self-guided Algarve road cycling Tour on a road bike

This Algarve road cycling holiday features many highlights. Nice rides will take you through the breathtaking landscapes of the Algarve. The beauty of the Southwest Algarve and Vicentine Coast Natural Park is superb and it’s excellent for road biking. The Algarve region is blessed with over 300 days of sunshine, the Algarve offers excellent temperatures to enjoy cycling at any time of year. Average temperatures vary between 15 degrees in January to 30 degrees in August and 20 degrees in November. More than 550 km (340 miles) of spectacular and challenging tracks. This program leads you along the Algarve coastline and into the backyards over quiet roads and through typical small villages in the hilly hinterland.

Cycle on your first cycle day in the region of Sagres and cycle over quiet roads in the hills of the magnificent Vicentine Coast Natural Park. From here you cycle the next 3 days through country roads. From cycling through the country roads, you’ll cycle the hills of the Algarve with a beautiful view of the coast. On the last cycling day, there is a Tavira loop ride which will let you see all the best of Tavira. So jump on your road bike and discover the Algarve on two wheels!

Day 1
Check in
Check-in from 13.00 in your hotel in Sagres. For those who want to have an airport pick up please contact us. After your arrival, you get an introduction and description of the tour; any questions will be welcome! After the briefing, you'll store your bikes or take a look at the bikes you may have rented.
Day 2
Sagres to Lagos
On your first cycling day, you start from the beautiful town of Sagres. The region of Sagres has a wonderful "Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina" (Algarve Southwest natural park and the Vicentina coast), and the Saint Vicent Cape is the furthest western point of Europe. Today you’ll cycle over quiet roads in the hills of the magnificent Vicentine Coast Natural Park.

Day 3
Lagos to Portimão
You can start the day by visiting the historical city of Lagos, which is a remarkable place in Portuguese history. Today you will cross the Valleys and typical quiet countryside roads of the Algarve with the impressive Monchique Mountains, the highest point of the Algarve.

Day 4
Portimão to Albufeira
Another day off the beaten track. Today you’ll continue cycling over the quiet country roads through small villages with their traditional cafes where you can taste all kinds of Portuguese delicatessen and of course the typical products of the Algarve. Stop for a coffee in São Bartolomeu de The countryside around Messines is lush and green with fruit trees galore on both sides of the roads - there are also lots of roadside stalls selling fruit along the way.

Day 5
Albufeira to Faro
The town of Albufeira is the major resort town in the Algarve this "once upon a time" fishing village has expanded and now has over 15,000 permanent residents. There are plenty of bars. You can find many good sandy beaches. The backyards of Albufeira are easy going and the fascinating view of the Algarve coast with the typical local towns and villages express some of the most wonderful cycling experiences you will ever forget! You will cycle through the town of Salir with the white charming houses surrounded by olive and almond trees.

Day 6
Faro to Tavira
Today's ride is mostly through the Hills of the Algarve. Leaving Faro you are soon cycling on quiet country roads heading inland. You will cycle through Cachopo which has the biggest parish with almost 200,00km2 s. It’s a very traditional village that is well known for the production of honey, wool, and cork. The production of cork which is taken from the Cork Oak is harvested every 9 years.

Day 7
Tavira Loopride
Tavira is a beautiful historic coastal town and only 20km away from the Spanish border. Tavira's main point of reference is the Gilão River and its Roman pedestrian bridge. Most of the city's tourist attractions are on the south side of the bridge, including what remains of the ancient city walls and Castle. Today you will cycle a nice loop ride through Vila Real de Santo António along the splendid hills of the Algarve. The town of Vila Real de Stº António is situated on the Rio Guadiana. The river splits the Algarve from Spain. If you stand eastern side of Vila Real you can see the Spanish coastline and the bridge over the river that connects the town to Ayamonte in Spain.
