Itinerary Cycle Italian Lake District

Day 1 Friday

Check in around 14.00h at your hotel in Varese. For those who want to have an airport pick up please contact us. This beautiful town will be your starting point for your upcoming tour. The tour leader will explain the coming activities and itinerary for this Italian Lake district cycling trip. 3 star hotel Varese- Dinner will be provided.

Day 2 Saturday

Laveno, Villa Bozzolo, Luino (option Marzio) Route: distance 97 km – 60 mi; elevation 1,040 m – 3,412 ft Challenging option: distance 102 km – 63 mi; elevation 1,340 m – 4,396 ft Major climbs: Ardena climb (3.2 km – 2 mi, avg. 6%, max. 8%), extra climb in the challenging option: Marzio climb (3.4 km – 2.1 mi, avg. 8%, max. 10%) Let's get started on our exploration of the foothills to the North of Varese. You'll ride cross three valleys: Valcuvia, Valganna, Valmarchirolo. You cycle along five lakes: Lake Maggiore, Lake Lugano, Lake Brinzio, Lake Ganna and Lake Ghirla, however the route is undulating. Along the route is located Villa Della Porta Bozzolo at Casalzuigno. You willl tackle the Ardena climb and, if you want, the extra Marzio climb in the challenging route. 3 star hotel Varese - Dinner will be provided


Day 3 Sunday

Lugano, Bellagio, Madonna del Ghisallo Route: distance 81 km – 50 mi; elevation 1,250 m – 4,100 ft Major climbs: Madonna del Ghisallo climb (10.5 km – 6.5 mi, avg. 5.2%, max. 11%) Today's ride has one focus: go up to the Shrine of Madonna del Ghisallo. The small Chapel is located at Magreglio (CO) between the two branches of Lake Como. A trip to Lake Como is not complete without a ride up to Ghisallo, visiting the museum and the chapel of La Madonna del Ghisello is a must do for every cyclist. You will cross the Swiss pre-alpine mountains and ride along Lake Lugano and Lake Como’s shore, passing through the lake side villages of Menaggio and Bellagio where the Madonna del Ghisallo climb starts. You come back to hotel by support vehicle. 3 star hotel Varese - Dinner will be provided

Day 4 Monday

Azzate, Angera, Gavirate (option Monte Campo dei Fiori) Route: distance 85 km – 53 mi; elevation 790 m – 2,592 ft Chellenging option: distance 111 km – 69 mi; elevation 1,620 m – 5,315 ft Major climbs: Sasso di Gavirate climb (5.4 km – 3.4 mi, avg. 3%, max. 6%), extra climb in the challenging option: Monte Campo dei Fiori climb (8.2 km – 5.2 mi, avg. 8%, max. 13%) The route in the Southern region of Varese is winding, with lots of ups and downs, through a number of small villages and through the gently rolling hillsides like Lake Varese, Lake Comabbio, Lake Monate and Lake Maggiore. You will see the panoramic view from Azzate and then we reach Angera, a medieval town on the shores of Lake Maggiore. You tackle the Sasso di Gavirate. For the fit ones: the extra Monte Campo dei Fiori climb in the challenging route. On top you will have a magnificent panorama! Monte Campo dei Fiori is known as the “balcony of Varese”. The Chapel on top belongs to the Unesco Worldwide Heritage Organisation is located 6km north of Varese. 3 star hotel Varese - Dinner will be provided.


Day 5 Tuesday

Malcantone, Colmegna (option Alpe Tedesco) Route: distance 83 km – 52 mi; elevation 1,520 m – 4,987 ft Challenging option: distance 94 km – 58 mi; elevation 1,850 m – 6,070 ft Major climbs: Brinzio climb (2 km – 1.2 mi, avg. 5.2%, max. 8%), Vernate climb (8.2 km – 5.2 mi, avg. 6%, max. 8%), extra climb in challenging option: Alpe Tedesco climb (4.7 km – 2.9 mi, avg. 8%) In the morning you will be transferred to your new hotel on the shores of Lake Maggiore. The ride of today leads you through the Regional Park of Monte Campo dei Fiori. The cycling route will be pass some beautiful lakes like Lake Brinzio, Lake Ganna and Lake Ghirla. After climbing down towards Lake Lugano you cross twice the border between Italy and Switzerland in the stunning Malcantone region. At the very last climb of today the last decent is back to your 4 *hotel in Luino on Lake Maggiore. Dinner included.

 

Day 6 Wednesday

Rest day In the morning visit by van to Hermitage of Santa Caterina del Sasso at Leggiuno on the shore of Lake Maggiore and Villa della Porta Bozzolo at Casalzuigno. Lunch in 4 star hotel in Luino. Dinner included

Day 7 Thursday

Sant'Antonio, San Martino, Montegrino (option Sette Termini) Route: distance 41 km – 26 mi; elevation 1,100 m – 3,609 ft Challenging option: distance 63 km – 39 mi; elevation 1,420 m – 4,659 ft. Major climbs: Sant'Antonio climb (4.4 km – 2.7 mi, avg. 6%, max. 8%), San Martino climb (2.4 km – 1.5 mi, avg. 10%), Montegrino climb (5 km – 3.1 mi, avg. 5.7%, max. 7%), extra climb in challenging option: Monte Sette Termini climb (5.5 km – 3.4 mi, avg. 7%, max. 8%) Cycling in Italy is superb !Today climbs are with downhills and views over the Lake Maggiore. You will cycle over small back roads close to Lake Maggiore through the gently rolling hillside passing little medieval villages. Highlight is the Sant’Antonio climb, as well the San Martino climb & the Montegrino climb. For those who need an extra mile: try the Sette Termini climb…..good luck!  4 star hotel in Luino - Dinner is included.

Day 8 Friday

Departure day…..Time to say goodbye, a good flight back home or else a pleasant stay in Italy. Transfers to the Airport will be made by the Tour guides. On request - according to the time of your flight!

Challenging option: distance 121 km – 75 mi; elevation 1,305 m – 4,282 ft Major climbs: extra climb in challenging option: Alpe Trarego climb (10.4 km – 6.4 mi, avg. 9%, max.13%). The main route is a flat ride around the Northern part of Lake Maggiore you will peddle over the rolling hills the upper region around Maggiore. You will ride through the pedestrian area of the cities of Locarno and Ascona and cross twice the border between Italy and Switzerland. The last piece of the route you will come back to hotel by car ferry. The Alpe Trarego is a real challenging climbs but the views on top are spectacular with a beautiful view of Lake Maggiore. 4 star hotel in Luino - Dinner will be provided.

Airport/ Train Information Cycle Northern Italy

Airport
The most important gateways to/from Varesa are the airports in Milan.

Milan has three important airports; the most important airport is Milan Malpensa, from here many flights leave /arrive worldwide. There are many regular flights to/ from Madrid, Brussels, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Berlin, Rome, London Heathrow, Copenhagen, Barcelona, Athens, Zurich and more very important cities from all around the Globe.

The second airport is Milan Linate which has a lot of domestic and European flights to all important cities in Europe. There is a shuttle bus connecting Malpensa with Linate Airport. The ride between the two airports takes more than an hour.

The third airport is Bergamo Airport (officially Orio al Serio International Airport) and is northeast of Milan, close to the city of Bergamo. This airport is especially used by budget companies like Ryanair.

From Milan Malpensa Airport to Milan Central station are Malpensa Shuttle busses departing: every 30 to 60 minutes Length: 1 hour.
From Milan Linate International Airport to Milan Central station busses departing every 30 minutes Length: 20 minutes. 

Bergamo Airport has no direct train connection, but there is a shuttle bus that takes you to the station in Bergamo.
